Any male shall be eligible for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) who is a citizen of good repute in the community and a lineal descendant of an ancestor who, at all times, remained loyal to and rendered acceptable service in the cause of American Independence. The SAR recognizes qualifying patriotic service, with certain exceptions, performed between April 19, 1775, and November 26, 1783.
Membership requires documented, acceptable proof of an ancestor’s service. Family tradition regarding an ancestor’s service will not be considered evidence.
No preliminary determination will be made concerning a line of descent, the nature of service, or the acceptability of proposed evidence. When evaluated in full context with all available documentation, preliminary judgments may prove inaccurate; therefore, the SAR does not participate in issuing informal or speculative evidentiary decisions. The Society reserves the right to accept or reject any evidence submitted.
